Be Engaged in the Now


Last week one of the greatest motivational speakers and self help authors of all time, Dr Wayne Dyer departed the earthly plane. As a tribute to our beloved Dr. Dyer I am choosing a card from his Inspiration Deck. Written on the card are these words: “Thinking about where you’ve been or been or what you did wrong in the past are impediments to an inspired life.  When your inspired your actually engaged in the now. In an infinite and never ending Universe there is no past”.

What does being in the Now mean?

To achieve this we need to be present in the moment with what is in front of us right now without distractions or judgements. We begin by being present with the self. Here is a simple exercise right here and right now in the present.

Take a moment and get comfortable and bring your awareness to your breath. Take a soft inhale and exhale – no effort required. Take another few breaths and bring your awareness to the sensation of breath. And now we bring our awareness into our body. Be aware of the sensations in your body — We are just noticing and just being with it — not judging.

The only thing that is real and accessible is what is happening now. The past has gone, the future is not yet here, we need to make the most of what we have here in this very moment. We can’t live in the past or the future, so it is pointless allowing our minds to live there

See if you can be present in your entire body. That’s right, you are here right now home in this body. Now begin to notice the sounds you may be aware of around you. You are simply noticing.  And be aware of the rising and falling of the breath. And bring this sense of awareness outside yourself. Allow your eyes to be present with whatever you are noticing around you.

Look around in this moment. What do you see, hear, feel? Just noticing and letting go of any attachments to thoughts – Let them float on by like clouds in the sky. We are practising simply being here. Just continue to be here with yourself. Fully present in the environment.

Taking a walk in nature will bring us to the now and reduce anxiety – notice five things with all senses without judgement or naming and analysing them. The rustle of the wind in the trees, the feel of the earth or grass beneath your feet, the smells around you and clouds above you.  When you are in the now there is no past or future.  The now is all we have – How will you make the most of it and create from this space?

Wayne often quoted T.S. Eliot who said, “We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time.”  Be open and curious …  not judgemental.  A field of opportunities will unfold in your consciousness.

Dr Dyer told us: “Eternity is now! Right now, right here, you’re an infinite being. Once you get past the fear of death as an end, you merge with the infinite and feel the comfort and relief that this realization brings”.
